Perhaps most famously known for his ‘Talking Heads’ Alan Bennet Untold Stories Born in Armley on 9th May 1934, Bennett grew up in an undeniably ‘Northern’ fashion that directed his writing talents towards portraying ‘ordinary people’ in a string of popular TV, stage and written works. Bennet attended Leeds Modern (state) School, and won an Oxford Scholarship in 1954, continuing on to take a first class degree in History from Exeter College, Oxford. Staying at Oxford for a number of years as a junior lecturer, he began his career in the entertainment world, starring with Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller, and Peter Cooke in 1960 at the Edinburgh Festival, which went on to take the West End by storm. Not as well known as his popular TV entertainer counterparts Cooke and Moore, Bennetts career has never the less been well publicised and applauded, and he is now known as one of Englands greatest Dramatists and writers. His works include nineteen individual television plays, four television series and three cinema films, as well as numerous stage works, short stories, assorted journalism and his own diaries. Bennett has collected numerous awards for TV and writing, and his Talking Heads monologues have been added to the A-Level syllabus as part of the national curriculum.
