Vic Reeves

Vic Reeves was born James (Jim) Roderick Moir in Leeds on 24th January 1959, to Jim and Audrey Moir, and although only stayed in Leeds for the first five years of his life before moving to Darlington co. Durham, can still be considered a son of Leeds.

His young life was a typical northern working class one, with Jim (known as Rod, to avoid confusion with his father) leaving Eastbourne school without any qualifications, and a dream of attending art school. This dream could not be achieved (yet) for a working class lad, but he admits in his autobiography, to sneaking into the various classrooms and workspaces in order to work on his ideas.

Jim ran through several ordinary jobs, working on a pig farm, cabbage farm and brake regulators.
Outside of work Jim joined with 5 friends (John Irvine, Rob Colbrook, Graham Bristow and Jack Dent) and dubbed themselves the Fashionable Five, and formed a band. In 1979 the Five moved to London to follow careers with the Civil Service.

London was the place where Jims creative talents flowed and Vic Reeves was born, performing in several bands, he became a regular of the London pub and club scene, and in 1983 started a part-time art school course to realise his dream of becoming an artist. (Vic still paints and exhibits under the name Jim Moir)

With his bands finding little success Jim turned to London’s alternative comedy circuit, with a number of character acts, including a loudmouth American called Jim Bell, a beat poet called Mister Mystery and, eventually, "The North-East’s Top Light Entertainer" - Vic Reeves. (Jim allegedly chose this namefrom two of his favourite singers Vic Damone and Jim Reeves)

His stage show Vic Reeves Big Night Out began life as a regular Thursday night gig at Goldsmith’s Tavern, New Cross, where Jim (now better known as Vic) met his comedy partner, a solicitor named Bob Mortimer. With growing success of the show, a Channel 4 Slot for the Big Night Out was comissioned and his TV career was born.

Throughout the 90’s Vic and Bob went from strength to strength, with a new sketch show ‘, and a hit multi-series quiz show ‘Shooting Stars’. Vic and Bob also found chart fame with two hit singles ‘Dizzy’ with the WonderStuff and ‘I’m a believer’ with EMF.
More recently Vic has starred in ‘Randall and Hopkirk (deceased)’, ‘I’m a Celebrity Get me out of Here’ and Catterick.

Vic is reported to be presenting the 2007 series of ‘Brainiac Science Abuse’ for Sky One.
